Reflection of the Soul

‘Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?’ And the mirror answered, ‘You are the fairest of them all’. I’m sure we have all heard these words from the well-known fairy tale ‘Snow White’. Although it is a fairy tale, it describes the vanity of mankind which seems to be getting greater with time. We all want to look our best no matter the time of the day or occasion. Grooming has come a long way, men and women spend a lot to beautify the image they see in the mirror. I was wondering, if our physical body made of mud is taken care of this much, then how much more carefully should we maintain our inner man for eternity?

Just as a mirror is a reflector of our physical image, the word of God is a mirror which reflects the inner man or our soul. If we read the word of God with an upright heart, then it will reflect the state of our soul. In Psalm 119: 5, 6 we read the Psalmist saying,

“Oh, that my ways were steadfast, in obeying your decrees! Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands.”

When we compare our life with His counsel, we will know where we stand. If we want our inner man to be healthy then we need to start hearing, receiving, loving, and obeying the word of God.

In Psalm 119:2, 3 we read,

“Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart, they do no wrong but follow his ways.”

Psalm 119:11 says,

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

The word of God helps to keep us away from sin by counseling us and guiding our steps. The benefits of reading the Bible and keeping its statues are infinite, but the toughest part is to get ourselves ready to read and meditate. The Word of God teaches us how to live a holy life. It is good to long for Jesus in our lives but it is equally important to long for holiness and righteousness in our life because that is what He longs to see in us.

So let us determine in our heart to study and meditate the word of God to live a life holy and blameless before God.
