The Fragrance of our Life

Last week I had a sudden craving for Pani-Puri. I’m not sure why it started or from where it came from. At some point the craving got so strong that (strangely enough) I even started to smell the sweet tangy sauce. I’ve read somewhere that science explains it as an illusion that your subconscious mind creates to counter the desire of your senses. This is not just with food, infact, it works with anything that gives out a fragrance. Whatever be the cause of it, the experience taught me something spiritual too. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 2:14, 15

“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”

We are the fragrance of Christ!! What does that mean? Smell’ is one of the more sensitive senses of our body. When people around us look at us, they should be able to ‘smell’ Christ. Our words, deeds and life should reflect the very nature of Christ is us. We diffuse the knowledge of Christ. When we surrender ourselves to the will of God, He manifests Himself through us. To God, we are the fragrance of Christ. We read in the Old Testament about animal sacrifices that produced an ‘aroma that was pleasing to God’. Today, we don’t have to sacrifice animals, but present ourselves (our lives) as a living sacrifice to God. This we read in Romans 12:1,2

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

When we submit ourselves to God, our lives becomes a fragrant (aroma) pleasing to God. We become a source of fragrance for all people around us to experience and know Christ through us. And so let us all “Walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 5:2)
