I recall the days when I was pregnant with Nathan as though it were yesterday. As two sides to a coin, there are good and bad memories, and one of them is the mood swings. The crankiness kicked ever so often that it became quite difficult for my partner to predict or deal with, and yet, the kindness and tolerance my husband showed towards me is worth a Nobel prize in my eyes. I would like to share with you one such incident that taught me a valuable lesson, and I’m hopeful it will help some of you too.
I was in one of my moods that afternoon when my husband walked in with few things he picked up from the store. He wanted me to have a look at it, but I was tired and I told him I’d look at it later. He came back after sometime with the same, and I again refused. On his third request, I lost my temper and I threw the things he brought and shouted at him asking him to leave me alone! As soon as I finished, I realized how rude my behavior was and I feared his reaction. He walked out of the room and returned five minutes later. What he did next left me speechless and impressed my heart till date.
He offered me a glass of lemonade, and said kindly “Phebe I know you are very tired, have some of this and rest for a while. You will be fine”. Tears rolled down my cheeks with joy, and I wonder up to this day on what would have happened if he had reacted the same way as I did. Things would have surely gone from bad to worse!
We read in Ephesians 4:2(NIV),
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
It’s easy to be gentle and loving when someone is the same way with you. But when someone is screaming in your face, or always looking out for your failures, it’s very difficult to swallow our pride, be humble and love them. We find it impossible to forgive someone who wronged us. But who said it was easy?? As the Adidas tag line says, ‘Impossible is nothing’! In Biblical terms, anything is possible to them that believe.
Bible says in Philippians 4:13(NIV),
I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
If we really wish to develop such humility and gentleness, patience and kindness, then we have to submit ourselves to Jesus who will mold us like a potter molds the clay into a beautiful vessel.
Strive to be a better person, strive to love when hate abounds, and strive to be patient when anger booms! If such attitude were infectious, what a beautiful place this world will be to live in!
We bow our Hearts
We bend our knees
Holy Spirit come make us humble
We turn our eyes from evil things
Give us clean hands
Give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another
