The Sound of your voice

Every morning as I leave for work, I make it a point to kiss my wife and son bye without fail. Occasionally, my 2 year old wakes up and says ‘daddy bye…love you’ and hugs me, even in sleep mode. Hearing those words always brings a smile to my face. On most days, when I return from the office, I hear his excited voice as he screams ‘daddy’ and runs to me. And then, there are days when he simply ignores my arrival because he is too busy or engrossed in something else.

This made me realizehow much my Father in Heaven desires for some quality time with me, a personal chat, or an occasional ‘I love you daddy’. How much it would please Him to see me run into His presence, in my best or worst state; how much it would upset Him when I am too busy with ‘my own stuff’ that I ignore Him or forget Him.

My wife and I usually take turns to pray over our son at his bedtime and at ours. Very often we spend a minute discussing whose ‘turn’ it is to pray, and usually I end up praying (being the head of the family – wife’s excuse 🙂 ).  I’m sure some of you are smiling as you read that and it reminded you of similar discussions at bedtime or at the meal table. I love to hear my son pray, as he folds his tiny hands and in his broken words and language, he prays (sometimes over the silliest of things like his toys and drums). If it pleases me so much, how much more it would please his maker, his Father in heaven to hear his voice!

There is nothing wrong in praying in your head, but it’s different when you say it out aloud. God has given us the ability of speech, and in Proverbs 18:21 , we read that “the tongue has the power of life and death”. In Isaiah 55:11, God says “My word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent.” There is power in the words we speak. This is what God says to the church or every believer in Song of Solomon 2:14,

“Let me see your face, let me hear your voice, for your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.”

God yearns to hear our voice! When was the last time He heard yours?

God wants to hear you sing

When the waves are crashing round you

When the fiery darts surround you

When despair is all you see

God wants to hear your voice

When the wisest man has spoken

And says, “Your circumstance is as hopeless as can be”

That’s when God wants to hear you sing

He loves to hear our praise on our cheerful days

When the pleasant times outweigh the bad, by far

But when suffering comes along

And we still sing Him songs

That is when we bless the Father’s heart
