Spiritual Heart Attack!

Recently I received an advice from a friend in regards to Nathan (my son) which taught me a great spiritual lesson. I was told not to let Nathan watch certain types of cartoons which promote violence, revenge or too much ‘dishum-dishums’. Ironically, this included one of my favorite cartoon in my childhood- Tom & Jerry. The explanation was quite simple. Kids tend to relate to the cartoon characters as real people and all the chasing, hitting, behavior etc as natural things and tend to ‘pick them up’ or copy them. Very often, it’s too late by the time parents realize the source of such violent outbursts. This is not their mistake as this is what they have been watching and feeding their heart and mind. We often don’t think of such things in depth and brush it away lightly. This is exactly what happens in our spiritual life as well.

 

Our heart is the wellspring of Life! It is the seat of all emotions and can influence every thought and action. No matter how small or big we are, eventually our thoughts and actions reflect the things which are in our heart. It is vital that we protect our heart from being attacked! Proverbs 4:23 says (NLT),

 

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

 

Jesus said “For whatever is in your heart determines what you say..”(Mathew 12:34,NLT).

We read in Luke 6:45(NLT),

 

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

 

It is important to choose what we consume through our senses (see, hear, speak, touch). If we intake things that are of high virtue then we will certainly exhibit the same grace to people around us. The quality of our ‘heart feeds’ will determine the quality of our life and our character. If we choose to expose our heart to filth we will eventually be tempted to act on it and fall into sin. It is very important to guard our heart so that we may lead a life holy and pleasing to God.

 

The Remedy for Spiritual Heart Attack!

We must allow the word of God to be rooted deep in our heart so that we may be fruitful in every good word and work. A spiritual understanding of the word of God, and a sense of the evil of sin, will cause a man to seek for the grace of the Holy Spirit, to keep down the evil thoughts and affections that work within. As Paul says in Philippians 4:8(NIV),

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

 

May the words of my mouth
And the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in your sight O Lord!

  1. i completely agree, even games influence kids a lot, and its very hard to make teenage kids to understand this fact.

  2. Its all in the upbringing. There are parent who glue their kids to TV so that they can complete their house chores, in this case the kids are not properly goverend and they tend to get restless due to lack of attention and do things their way.
    Its also depends on how godly the parents are and how much they submit the kid into the lords hand for bringing up the kids in obedience. Lord will take care of the rest.

    1. Thank you Amoolya for your comment. I agree that the upbringing, culture, discipline etc will affect the thinking of the child. Some of us have been brought up watching these types of cartoons, and you might think you turned out fine. The thinking of todays generation is much more advanced, and I was burdened to write about this after reading and hearing of several incidents with children where tv programs in general have affected behavioural patterns in kids. I fully agree with you that parents should not use television to keep kids ‘occupied’. The viewing should be strictly governed. In other words, what you sow into them ,you reap.

  3. “Loved the way the things was presented —Parents should monitor what there children watch and above all pray and interceed for them regularly” In all this I just wish to say one thing too much restriction allows the children to look in to these things when noone is watching them. And child samuel was God fearing and God was on watch of him since young ages eventhough he had a tough circumstances ( Eli’s sons wicked ways) he could have easily followed their footsteps but God was in control of his life.and above all he was a promised child. So the priority lies to pray for God’s selection in our childrens life and then guide them with love and great understanding from above……
