When thoughts pull you down!

Almost everyone will at some time in their life be affected by depression, including feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, worthlessness and helplessness. I too was caught in this web several times, and I felt that nothing was going the way I expected. I preferred to be left alone and far away from everyone. Fear seized my heart and I found myself in tears followed by sleepless nights & worry over how I could turn things around.

I’m sure many of us have been in the same boat and have been pulled down by our own thoughts & imaginations. The world seeks help from doctors, medication, self-help books; but the word of God teaches us the best way out!

The Bible teaches us to use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to cast down “imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and [bring] into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:4,5(KJV)

Here, Paul speaks of the mighty weapons of warfare that can be used to pull down the strongholds of human reasoning & false arguments.

For example, consider a boy who has given his exams and awaiting his results. The devil sows a seed of fear of failure in him and he begins to imagine about his failure in the exams and the things that may follow. He imagines being scolded by his parents, being ridiculed by his friends and relatives etc.  He worries about the ‘worst case scenarios’ and thinks of excuses & lies to get out of a situation that has not even happened. He forgets that God‘s will for his life is to be victorious & not a failure.  In this case, God would want him to cast down such imagination that rises against God’s will for him and enjoy His peace.

God wants us to cast down every thought that rises against the knowledge of God’s will for our lives i.e. anything that forms an obstacle between you and His will. God wants to use our powerful thought process to strengthen our faith.

Bible says in Philippians 4: 8, 9(NLT)

Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise………Then the God of peace will be with you.

Just picture how great life would be for us if we would fix our thoughts on the above attributes of God. We can enjoy God’s peace in our lives when we keep our thought process aligned to His standards.  In our times of distress, let us remember that God loves us and desires to reveal great things He has planned for us.

Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
