Recently I received an advice from a friend in regards to Nathan (my son) which taught me a great spiritual lesson. I was told not to let Nathan watch certain types of cartoons which promote violence, revenge or too much ‘dishum-dishums’. Ironically, this included one of my favorite cartoon in my childhood- Tom & Jerry. The explanation was quite simple. Kids tend to relate to the cartoon characters as real people and all the chasing, hitting, behavior etc as natural things and tend to ‘pick them up’ or copy them. Very often, it’s too late by the time parents realize the source of such violent outbursts. This is not their mistake as Continue reading Spiritual Heart Attack!
Impossible is Nothing!
I recall the days when I was pregnant with Nathan as though it were yesterday. As two sides to a coin, there are good and bad memories, and one of them is the mood swings. The crankiness kicked ever so often that it became quite difficult for my partner to predict or deal with, and yet, the kindness and tolerance my husband showed towards me is worth a Nobel prize in my eyes. I would like to share with you one such incident that taught me a valuable lesson, and I’m hopeful it will help some of you too.
I was in one of my moods Continue reading Impossible is Nothing!
A Silent Deal!
‘I did not do it…why won’t anyone believe me?”, “why are they saying such things about me?”, “Who is making up such stories? I was never involved!” “I swear…Such a thing never happened!”
Any of these sound familiar?
These are few statements which we often speak when we hear of people who have misunderstood us or falsely accused us of something. I’m sure most of us Continue reading A Silent Deal!
Did I Make a Difference?
One of the first things that people suggested after I got to Dubai was that I should get my driving license, and now I know why! Although there were struggles along the way, the word of God kept me strong. I still recall the morning when I gave my final driving test. I was so nervous I could count my heartbeat. After my turn was over, the officer looked me straight in the eye, paused for a few seconds (although it felt like hours to me) and told me ‘Phebe you passed’. When thoughts pull you down!
Almost everyone will at some time in their life be affected by depression, including feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, worthlessness and helplessness. I too was caught in this web several times, and I felt that nothing was going the way I expected. I preferred to be left alone and far away from everyone. Fear seized my heart and I found myself in tears followed by sleepless nights & worry over how I could turn things around. Continue reading When thoughts pull you down!
Let it Shine!
There was a time when shopping used to be simple. Milk was just milk and bread was just bread. Today, life is so much more complicated. Milk comes in varieties like skimmed, low-fat; full cream, full fat etc. Buying bread is even more complex! One item I recently purchased is a light bulb. I found myself in front of a rack of different types of bulbs. There were halogen bulbs, fluorescent, LED, high intensity, incandescent etc. Each bulb produces different intensity of light and was designed with Continue reading Let it Shine!
What is your code?
Have you ever woken up some morning and wondered who you really are or what is the purpose of your life? I have! It is surprising how God can answer your million dollar questions through the smallest things.
I was at the billing counter of a grocery shop when I noticed the cashier scan my items using the barcode on each product. This of course made the cashier’s job much easier as opposed to punching in numbers as in the good old days. All he had to do was put the item under a scanner and all the details would appear on the screen. My thoughts wandered around the bar code system. Continue reading What is your code?
As a Mother Comforts Her Child…
As a home maker, I sometimes struggle to hit the balance between looking after our home and our 1 year old son Nathan. Usually my house work gets done when he is asleep, so I can finish everything without interruption. Even in the midst of this, I would often run to his room to check on him, his sleeping position, rhythm of breathing etc. and also if he is about to wake up. In case he wakes up and finds no one around, he starts crying and I run to him hearing his cry to comfort him. I would rather prefer staying next to him when he wakes up smilingly than to see him cry.
In the midst of complicated situations when there is no answer in sight but a closed door, praise God for the answer given for all things asked in prayer. The mighty power of God will descend & change the situation. This praise should be from the heart, born out of faith that God is in control of the situation.
Try a Little Kindness!
Recently I happened to listen to one of the song by Glen Campbell titled ‘Try a Little Kindness’ which touched my heart very much. As I listened to it over and over again, God began to speak to me through that song. The lyric goes like this –
If you see your brother standing by the road
With a heavy load from the seeds he’s sowedAnd if you see your sister falling by the way
Just stop and stay you’re going the wrong way
You got to try a little kindness
Yes show a little kindness
Just shine your light for everyone to see
And if you try a little kindness
Then you’ll overlook the blindness
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets
I guess the message about kindness is conveyed well through this song. There are times when we see our friends, brothers and sisters facing difficult situations in their lives because of the seeds they have sown in the past. We see people who stumble in their walk of life because of the wrong decisions they make. When we see such things happening around us,most of the times we find ourselves engaged in gossiping about those people from ear to ear, spreading news about their fall. Often we forget who we are in Christ and what the Bible teaches us to do for them.
All we need to do is to “Try a little kindness’.We have to let our light which we have received from Jesus to shine for everyone to see. We have to lend a helping hand to those who have fallen. The word of God instructs us to admonish them and bring them back to the love of Christ. We read in the gospels that Jesus had compassion towards the sick and His heart went out for them. He never let anyone return the same way they came to Him but he healed their sickness, restored their lives and delivered the oppressed. Jesus was full of love and compassion. So we who are saved and called out for His kingdom also should have the same attitude that of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:5 (NIV)
We read in Ephesians 4:32(NIV)
“Be kind and compassionate; Forgive each other just as Christ forgave you”
and again in Colossians 3:12(NIV) ,
”….. Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
We have to be compassionate and kind towards people who are spiritually blind and help them know the truth. The time and effort we invest in the kingdom of God will reap great harvest.
No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted. So let us try a Little Kindness!!
